Buying Time: Fourteen (final)

That's all folks. This is the last track/part of this particular Momentum Project, as my residency at Testing Grounds concludes today.

The track begins with my feedback experiments from yesterday, double tracked (still super bassy: listen with headphones).

Then there's the iconic iPhone alarm sound, reproduced at different pitches then reversed.

For the duration of the residency I've been taking a photo each hour to document my time here (see, then setting a timer for 60 minutes so I know when to do the next one. It's been interesting to see how some hours fly by when I'm engrossed in something, and others crawl. I also now have a visual timeline of the residency, which is kinda cool.

Buying Time: Thirteen

I've never played much with feedback before but I had some fun yesterday when I gave in to the constant traffic drone at Testing Grounds and manipulated the feedback it creates with my drum mics. After awhile the whole room starts to vibrate, and the snare as well, and it all feeds in to the bassy, soupy mix.

This is most definitely a listen with headphones track.

Last week I had a visit from (and jam with) an ex Melbourne/current Hobartian artist, Richie Cyngler aka Glitchpop. He played some tracks through his phone and processed them on the fancy box in the picture (actual name of fancy box to come).

Buying Time: Eleven

This start of the last week of my residency and the first of some collaborative tracks. This one starts with the Alexandra Gardens waterfall from last week and goes on to include several different pitched versions of a machinery sample, sent in a text message from my partner in crime and other musical adventures last Thursday.

I haven't trimmed the sample and you can hear people whistling in the background while they work. I think it's quite special :).

Buying Time: Nine

A short track today, and with little tinkering. Something else that is new for me is doing less manipulating/processing of field recordings, and letting longer samples of environments speak for themselves, traffic noise, camera clicks, and all.

This track is made up of recordings of the little waterfall in the Alexandra Gardens from yesterday, plus me walking in the dry-ish Winter leaves in the same park. Two of the leaves samples are as is, one is pitch shifted with a ring modulator effect.

Buying Time: Eight

There's a few things about this particular Momentum project that are different to the past ones. I am not recording every single day, but I will re mix all the Buying Time tracks into one complete composition at the end, and the individual tracks themselves are cumulative (ie. each one starts with the same sample as the previous one finished with).

Also previously I set myself the goal of not capturing/playing/recording the same environment/sound/instrument more than once. Because this residency is very much situated in the Melbourne CBD and I am doing some similar things day to day I'm treating some of the samples like musical motives, that appear and reappear in different iterations throughout the work.

Today: messing around a bit on the drums from yesterday, pitched down and with a fast delay. Plus running water from a little waterfall in the Alexandra Gardens.

Buying Time: Seven

A first foray into using drum microphones in the concrete box - not necessarily the easiest task. I applied all the plug-ins known to woman: delays, ring mod, other various pitch and time stretchers, vocoder (which I love on metallic sounds). There's some (lots) more investigation to do here for sure.

Buying Time: Six

I brought all of my cymbals in to the studio today, then decided to just play one: my ufip ride with super sparkly rivets.

This track starts with a sample of Corpus Medicorum tuning up at the Recital Centre yesterday. The sample is doubled, reversed, and pitch shifted down.

The cymbal track is layered and pitched down also, with a granular delay and high pass filter to distract from the passing trucks and traffic!

Buying Time: Five

Walking in the city on Friday evening I heard some incredibly cool (and loud!) birdsong. From wattlebirds, and some others I couldn't identify. I added them (complete with traffic: cars, and trucks) to this track.

I also recorded Corpus Medicorum, who I've been playing with these week, tuning up for their performance at the Recital Centre today.

Buying Time: Four

This is a Thursday and Friday post/track rolled into one. Last night I recorded a couple of sound engineers checking microphones before my gig with Emah Fox at Boney. These are double tracked with delays and some eq to try (I failed) to get rid of the hum of the bar fridge.

Today I had a meeting with Elnaz Sheshgelani and Mark Pedersen about a gig we'll be putting on next week, and took the opportunity to put some dry leaves from Tuesday. into the fire. Also double tracked with delays.

Plus looped guitar from Wednesday, pitched down and reversed.

I put my waiting time at the NGV to see Van Gogh to good use, recording some crowd noise and conversation.

Then my old friend and former student popped by the studio to get her 14th birthday present from me - Tallulah's all over the looping already and composed something to add to my track today. It's reversed and pitched down.

Buying Time: Two

I forgot my jacket today so i did a bit of running around to keep warm: including stomping in Winter leaves (not quite as crunchy or satisfying as Autumn leaves) and jumping on some of the metal structures at Testing Grounds. Both samples were stretched and time shifted. The leaves have the same ring modulator effect as yesterday, and the metal samples run through a vocoder.

Buying Time: One

The first in a series of as yet unknown movements, a late addendum to my existing Momentum projects.

I'm in residence at the Testing Grounds in Melbourne for the next three weeks.

Each day that I am here where time allows I will make a track, comprising field recordings and improvised performances.

At the culmination of the residency each of the tracks will be re-worked into one long-form sound art work.

Part One: Daytime/city/Melbourne traffic, trucks in the Arts Centre underpass, rain on the studio roof. EQ to try to manage the wind - ring modulator on the trucks. High pass filter to try (again) to manage the wind...
